Embracing the Year of the Fire Horse

The Chinese New Year began on February 17th. For the first time since 1966, this is the year of the Fire Horse! This legendary fiery steed is born every 60 years to lead us all into the new year with strength and courage, but what else does this symbol of a smoldering equine mean for all of us?

To understand why 2026 is not just the year of the Horse but of the Fire Horse, you need to understand both the Legend of the Horse and how the fire element from the Chinese zodiac affects the Horse sign.

The Chinese zodiac consists of 12-year cycles, with each year represented by a different animal, including the horse in the 7th year. The five elements are also included in the zodiac: fire, water, earth, wood, and metal. They rotate within the 12-year cycle, resulting in a larger 60-year rotation for the elements and animals. The last “Year of the Fire Horse” was in 1966, and we have now entered the next Fire Horse year in 2026.

Legend has it that the Horse of the zodiac was a heavenly steed with wings created from wisps of cloud, who loved racing across the heavens and chasing the moon. The Horse loved the freedom and independence she found among the stars as she rode the celestial winds. China’s Jade Emperor saw the Horse and her love of freedom, and was impressed by her free spirit and charisma. He gave the Horse royal reign over all the heavenly horses.

The Horse of legend soon grew weary of all that this new royalty role took from her life, and she felt burdened and restricted. She yearned for the freedom and independence she once knew. She left the emperor’s land to claim her freedom and chase the moon again, but was caught and punished for her boldness and disrespect. Having fallen from heaven, the horse could never fly again, yet she still had a restless spirit and a need for constant motion.

“This beautiful legend is a reflection of many of the women’s stories we hear in our program,”

said Amanda Graham, founder of Unbridled Way Forward, a mental health and wellbeing practice that incorporates horses, located in Rougemont, NC.  “The Horse was given recognition and royalty, everything she was supposed to want, yet she still longed for something more, something more aligned with her true spirit. Many women have taken on responsibilities, roles, and expectations that have brought power, recognition, and accomplishment, yet some part of them feels something is missing.”

For five years, Amanda and the Unbridled Way Forward team have incorporated equine-assisted services to guide people to explore their own restless spirit, where they feel burdened, restricted, and stuck in their lives, and discover their authentic path. Through individual psychotherapy, personal development, retreats, and group offerings such as monthly ‘Herd Meditations’, people work through difficult emotional places in facilitated experiences with horses in a safe environment. Horses invite them to slow down, breathe deep, and connect with that quiet wisdom that sometimes gets lost in the busyness of their lives.

“The ‘Unbridled Self Journey’ is one of the individual programs we provide  - an 8-session program that invites participants to cross the threshold into a journey of self-discovery and possibilities - not to find something new but to remember and reconnect with some essential part of their true nature,” Amanda said. As a personal growth program, the Journey focuses on building courage, confidence, wisdom, and clarity. This program offers an organic, individualized experience that recognizes each person’s path and helps them uncover what they are truly meant to become. “We come to realize that there's something within us that is greater than all the parts.”

The year of the Fire Horse traditionally brings people the energy and fuel to break through barriers and pursue what truly sets their souls aflame. Fire illuminates, fire transforms, fire reveals what can no longer remain hidden: the call toward one’s authentic path and purpose. But tempering that intensity is the essence of other qualities the horse embodies: calmness, courage, connectedness, and curiosity.

“Curiosity and courage led the Horse of legend to relinquish her responsibilities and chase the moon,” said Amanda. This Year of the Fire Horse is not a time of quiet or to be timid. It’s a year to act with boldness, to be fearless, and to trust your inner fire to lead the way. It is time to choose yourself, as the Fire Horse did when she sacrificed her royal office to choose her true nature and her freedom.

On October 10th, Amanda will harness the energy and passion of this extraordinary year with a special group event - “Return to Yourself: A Fire Horse Retreat for Women”. This full-day retreat is for women who find themselves at a threshold, feeling called toward something more authentic, more alive, and more aligned with who they truly are.

Together in this circle of women, they will explore what it means to Return to Ourselves - not by becoming someone new, but by remembering who we have always been.

Is 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse, your year to choose to trust in yourself and to find your purpose and passion? The opportunity is here to embrace the spirit and courage of the Fire Horse to change your life for the better.
